New Zealand is one of the most sought-after destinations by students who are on the lookout for quality education in world-recognized universities. For students who wish to study a full-time course for the duration of more than three months, you are required to apply for a student visa. The process may seem tough but with proper research and guidance, you will be able to get through it.

Before applying, explore institutions and study options that best suit your career and then decide on a course. Also, make sure to gather all the important documents needed to apply. Students are required to apply for a visa at least three months before course commencement. After you are done deciding on a course and university you’d like to study, complete the university’s course application form online by paying the required fees and submitting all necessary documents.

You’ll need to include your relevant academic transcripts, valid passport, English Language test results like your IELTS score, and even an updated CV if you’re applying for a postgraduate program. Universities have their own requirements so other documents may be needed as well, so make sure you see the document check-list on their website. You are likely to receive an offer of place from the university within 3 to 4 weeks of applying and it can take even longer depending on your study program.

To apply for a New Zealand student visa, you will need an offer of a place that is sent by your university after receiving the tuition fees. You are required to have the following documents in order to complete the student visa application process:

  • An offer of place from an approved educational institution in New Zealand
  • A valid passport
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Receipt of payment of tuition fees
  • Medical certificate and chest x-ray
  • Police certificate from home country
  • Proof of sufficient funds that you need to support yourself for the duration of your study which is NZ$15,000 each year to cover living expenses
  • Visa application fee

Student visa application form can be downloaded from the Immigration New Zealand website. After you have paid the application fee, the receipt needs to be included in your complete application. The fees to be paid and other information can be found on the official New Zealand Immigration website.
