Algoma University, commonly shortened to Algoma U or Algoma, is a public university with its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. With a particular focus on the needs of Northern Ontario, Algoma U is a teaching-focused and student-centered post-secondary institution specializing in liberal arts, sciences, management, and professional degree programs. Located on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, Algoma U has a special mission to provide and cultivate cross-cultural learning between Aboriginal populations and other communities. Algoma U also offers satellite programming in Brampton and Timmins, Ontario.

From its founding in 1965 until June 18, 2008, Algoma U was an affiliated college of Laurentian University in Sudbury and was officially known as Algoma University College. The enabling legislation is the Algoma University Act of 2008.

Mission

Commitment to cross-cultural learning between Anishinaabe communities and the world infuses every aspect of campus life. The University's diverse student body is nearly 50% international. The global reach of Algoma’s exchanges and deep community partnerships combine to give our grads invaluable cross-cultural insights and unique leadership advantages.

History

Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury. In 1967, Algoma College began offering classes in a portable building located at the Cambrian College site, now the Sault College site. Algoma College moved into its current location, the former Shingwauk Residential School building, in 1971.

Vision

  1. University is an institution that has been granted a Charter to serve the needs of the Algoma region and, to some extent, Northern Ontario more broadly and recognizes that to do so well, the University must be an institution that welcomes students, staff, and faculty from all parts of the province and all aspects of the planet.
  2. Charter confers a "special mission" to focus on teaching and learning and to be mainly dedicated to pursuing excellence in undergraduate education.
  3. Because of the University's location on a former Indian residential school site, Charter also confers a special mission to engage in "cross-cultural learning" and to be a valuable resource for the Anishinaabe people and people.
  4. University aspires to be an institution of approximately 3,000 students, of whom a significant and increasing proportion will be Anishinaabe or international.
  5. Focused primarily on excellence in undergraduate education, the university aspires to offer a small selection of Masters-level programs critical for our region's economic and social development.
